Preparedness and preppers are all about the basics and that’s what you need to survive, food, water, shelter, protection, etc, etc. Once prepared or in addition to the basics you might want to think about comfort or what some call luxury items to add to your preps. I was raised up way out in the country not to far from The Bone Yard Slash, country folks, country parents and grand parents,……I was surrounded by the basic ways to live life in a fairly independent way,…….hence the Hank Williams JR song ” A Country Boy Can Survive”………..that right there is a preppers theme song and the way that I was raised ! There’s a new preppers song or it should be by Corb Lund ” Gettin Down on The Mountain ” check it out.
Back to our other items besides the basics. I’m not a daily smoker or dipper or chewer but three or four evenings during the week…..weather permitting I like to go out on the back porch and have one of the above mentions tobacco products. If you don’t use any of these products you might want to stash some for trade purpose. I like a good cigar, for me that’s $1.50 to $3.50 each but for long lasting preps try stashing some “Back Woods Smokes”. I opened a package that was 5 or 6 years old and they were still fresh and smoked great, the packaging is the secret my opinion. I opened a 8 to 10 year old package of ” Red Man” and it was a little dry but no worse than some plug chewing tobacco that I grew up chewing like ” Days Work” , ” Browns Mule “, etc. I pulled off a piece and after less than a minute in my jaw it was good as new,…..seriously…maybe better…….it made me miss the plug tobacco of my youth. Dry snuff makes me happy,….plain and simple. ” W.E. Garrett Sweet Snuff ” is the first tobacco that I ever stole a dip of when I was about 3 or 4 years old. Never made me sick and I love it to this day. Dry powdered snuff will last forever if kept dry like gun powder. Tobacco products get old and stale but these that I mention I myself have put them to the test.
Store hard candy as a mood lifter for all ages during a ” shit hits the fan ” situation. Hard candy kept dry and away from extreme heat will store for many many years, I have some over ten years old and no change in flavor ( basic information – sugar doesn’t good bad).
Musical instruments even if you don’t know how to play will entertain you and sooth your nerves and lower blood pressure. A small hand held drum, harmonica ( fits in your pocket, can take it anywhere) a guitar or old fashion mouth harp any of these can entertain you and your family or friends, no electricity required , if its natural disaster or ” SHTF” situation.
Books that you like or think you would like,….I recommend the Bible first and foremost. I have a library of preparedness books that range from gardening, chickens, medical and dental and of course cooking and guns.
Some people like games, I’m old fashioned checkers, dominoes, cards, darts, knife throwing, hatchet throwing and for inexpensive and quite target shooting I have a couple of high powered pellet guns .177 caliber. You can buy bulk pellets by the thousands cheap and not to mention you can hunt small game with them if you want to or have to. Self defense? I say yes because I don’t care to be shot with one.
Any comments or suggestions welcome. Lets get helpful information out there and try to help one another……..do not depend on the government.
Remember Folks all you need to survive in this life is Jesus and a .45 !
